Press Release - Grameen Telecom (03 June 2020)
The use of face masks during the Covid-19 epidemic has been widely regarded as a very successful and essential safety measure for all. According to various international studies and the announcement from the Department of Health of Bangladesh, the use of masks made of cloth, especially those made of knit fabrics, significantly reduces the risk of coronavirus infection. Even though the spread of the virus is on the rise, people are stepping out of their homes for various reasons. As the country slowly becomes functional, compliance with the hygiene rules is becoming mandatory. As face masks are essential for everyone, Grameen Telecom has taken the initiative to make these masks available to those who cannot afford them and those who do not have access to them.
The government has made the use of face masks compulsory for all. The use of masks is essential for personal health protection and compliance to government laws. As the masks supplied by Grameen Telecom are effective and reusable, the use of masks by the general public, especially the poor, can be ensured. Grameen Fabrics and Fashions Ltd., funded by Grameen Telecom, started producing these masks at the end of last April and these masks have been distributed among disadvantaged people in remote areas of the country from April 30, free of cost.
So far 1 million and 20 thousand masks have been produced. So far, more than one million masks have been distributed through 37 organizations including Grameen organizations as well as various NGOs and voluntary organizations outside Grameen. The production and distribution of these masks will continue until the corona virus is brought under control.
Any organization or individual interested in procuring face masks to distribute at their own initiative may contact Grameen Telecom through email at :
